                              MUSIC with Ms. Sherrie!

                              Welcome to the Music Page!
My name is Sherrie Newman, and I am the Music Teacher here at SLC!
Each month the preschoolers will have a Music Theme that will guide them in what songs they learn
and  introduce them to different musical terms, styles or instruments.

                              Music Activity

The month of March is a great time to start MARCHING!  So we will learn about Marching Bands and the different instruments that work together.  This is a very fun month to March together...the children get excited to prepare their 'Band' and get to March through the other classrooms and around the playground during our music time.  We will also be learning about other instruments that DON'T belong in a Marching Band; a Violin, a Mandolin, a Ukulele and a guitar.  I will bring these in to share with the students.  If there are any parents out there who want to share THEIR instrument/talent with us, we would love to have you visit!

As we continue to focus on Rhythm, each class room will have a tray full of fun 'drum like' instruments!  They will be encouraged to experiment with their drums and play Forte/Piano (Loud and Soft) as well as Andante/Allegro (Slow/Fast)...but always using a rhythm (A steady even beat).   Don't be surprised if your little musician comes home and wants to show off their drumming skills on your pots and pans!  If so...join in and have fun!

Students in each class room will have the chance to 'make their own pie'!!! ...well, a pretend pie that is, made out of musical symbols!  Quarter notes and quarter rests will be part of a small pie plate to help the children visualize how a 'rhythm' in a song can be made up of beats that you 'play' or 'rest'.

Seeing and hearing my guitar at school can be a new experience for some children, so I like to 'introduce' them to the sights and sounds it can make so they will learn to love to sing with the music it will play during our class time.

                              The Benefits of Music...

                              (from www.education.com)
Kids who grow up hearing music, singing songs, and moving to the beat are enjoying what experts call "a rich sensory environment." That's just a fancy way of saying they're exposed to a wide variety of tastes, smells, textures, colors, and sounds. And researchers believe this forges more pathways between the cells in their brains.

Musical experiences are an important way to help create these pathways, also called neural connections. And while listening to music is certainly key to creating them, it's when kids actively participate in music that they make the strongest connections.

Research shows that kids who are actively involved in music (who play it or sing it regularly):
                              • do better in reading and math when they start school
                              • are better able to focus and control their bodies
                              • play better with others and have higher self-esteem
